Last of the Medical Missionaries pioneers dies
A founder member of the Medical Missionaries of Mary,as buried yesterday. Sister M. Magdalen O'Rourke, who would have been 99 today, was one of the three pioneer sisters, including founder, Mother Mary Martin, who established the Medical Missionaries of Mary in Nigeria in 1937. She died peacefully at the Congregation's Motherhouse in Drogheda on Tuesday evening (11th November). Known as Brigid O'Rourke before joining the Medical Missionaries, Sr M. Magdalen was born in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim in 1909. Educated at Rathmines Technical School, she worked for a number of years in the Civil Service and was a founding member of the Catholic Girl Guides. She was also very active in the Legion of Mary. In 1934 following a pilgrimage to Rome with the Catholic Girl Guides she was introduced to Marie Martin - the future Mother Mary Martin - by Fr Dermot Boylan who was the spiritual director of her presidium of the Legion of Mary.
At that time the future founder was gathering her first group of helpers, who were providing assistance to the monks at Glenstal where the Boys' School was in its early years of development. At age 26, Brigid O'Rourke joined the little group in Glenstal in 1935. The following year she trained in midwifery at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin and by December was on the high seas, heading for Nigeria with the founder, Mother Mary Martin, and fellow pioneer, the future Sr. M. Joseph Moynagh. The little community settled at Anua, near Calabar. The Congregation was founded on April 4 1937, although the founder was seriously ill and made her vows in a hospital bed in Port Harcourt. Sr M. Magdalen and Sr M. Joseph began their novitiate in the Holy Child Convent in Ifuoha, She returned to Ireland in 1938 and was instrumental in the establishment of the first Novitiate of the Medical Missionaries of Mary at Collon, Co. Louth. She became the first Editor of the order’s publications in January 1940, and throughout her life was involved in promotion work and vocation recruitment for the Congregation, in Ireland, UK, USA and Africa. In her latter years she was frequently called upon by younger members of the Congregation to write and talk about her early memories, which she did in a generous spirit and always with great inspiration and enthusiasm.
“Because she survived, in a way she filled the role of the founder and pioneer since the death of Mother Mary Martin in 1975,” Sr Isabella Smyth, Editor of the order’s magazine, Healing and Development.
The Congregation had been preparing to celebrate her 99th birthday today, when she unexpectedly died. “She had been very alert, making plans for her birthday, although she had been weakened by a fall a while back. On Tuesday we noticed the extremities of her body were cold. She deteriorated during the day, and slipped away at 8.00pm that night,” said Sr Isabella.
Sr M. Magdalen was buried in St Peter’s cemetery in Drogheda alongside Mother Mary Martin, her beloved founder, in whose footsteps she followed for so many years. Today there are about 400 Medical Missionaries of Mary working in fourteen countries, and a further 27 sisters in formation in novitiates in Nairobi, Kenya and Ibadan, Nigeria.

The Cardinal’s letter is read this weekend at Masses, a brochure summarising the letter is available in the church porch and there will be meetings of parish representatives within the next 8 weeks followed by a parish wide meeting to be held in Lent 2009. Please continue to pray for the process in the coming weeks and months.

The total Envelope and Church Plate Collection for October amounted to €6287. Thanks to all parishioners for their regular financial commitment.

Parish Concert

Thanks to all who participated in and attended last Sunday night’s parish evening of song and drama, music and reflection in St.Michael’s. The Mornington Gospel Choir opened with very joyful gospel music followed by the Little Duke Theatre’s ‘Spirit of the Boyne’ which told the story of Ireland from pre-Christian times through Celtic and monastic Ireland, the Normans and days of religious warfare and famine to the present day. This was all achieved through the talents of many young actors and performers who clearly have great futures ahead of them. With the outstanding musical support of Joseph Dunne, the Drogheda Ceoltas and our own St.Michael’s choir there was never a note out of place. It was an interesting experience to be addressed by Oliver Cromwell from the altar steps!

The students and teachers from The Little Duke Theatre were;
Andy Gallagher William Gogan Derval O’Donovan Eva Short
Eric O’Brien Jamie Gogan Jenny Heavey Claire Maher
Mark Hughes Naoise Gogan Aoife Kerr Megan Maher
Sean Tester David Phelan Christina Matthews Rita Donovan
Darren Cappelli John Kelly Christine Phelan Christopher Murphy
William Gogan Cian Gogan Michelle Phelan

The Spirit of the Boyne was Written, Directed and Produced by Brenda Gogan Harrington.
Recorded Music Composed and Produced by Colin Blakey
Lights and Sound by John McGovern Sound Operator – J.J.Harrington Choreography by Donna Murphy Costumes by Pauline Halpin Projectionist: Saul Rasie Stage Manager: Joanne Mallon
Assistant Stage Manager: Susie Leland
With special thanks to Liam Reynolds ( ‘The Medieval Parishes of Clogherhead and Walshestown’) Barry McHugh, Mateusz Gauza and Ronan Cafferty.

The celebration ended with the unveiling of a plaque to Fr.Richard Everard (P.P. Clogherhead 1853-1863) by his descendant Mr.John Roche and Fr.Laurence Carraher P.P.Tullyallen.

Many people have since spoken of the occasion as both moving and memorable and the refreshments provided afterwards by the ladies of the ICA in the most difficult circumstances was greatly appreciated. The amount raised through ticket sales was €1,600 which goes towards the cost of the recent redecoration and refurbishment of St.Michael’s.

Bible Reading Marathon Pope Benedict XVI kicked off a Bible-reading marathon on Italian television, which he called a "fitting accompaniment" to the world Synod of Bishops on the Word of God.The Pope read from Genesis on "Bibbia Giorno e Notte" (Bible Day and Night), a program broadcast by RAI where the Bible will be read from beginning to end in various languages by nearly 1,200 readers.The Pontiff's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, will conclude the marathon Saturday, reading the last chapter of Revelation.Readers will include, among others, participants in the 12th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church," which the Holy Father inaugurated today. The synod will end Oct. 26.The site of the reading will be the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusaleme in Rome. Organizers received 180,000 requests to participate in the event. Benedict XVI spoke about the event after reciting the Angelus with thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican today. He said, “This event is a fitting accompaniment to the Synod of Bishops on the Word of God.“The Word of God can thus enter into homes to accompany the lives of families and single persons: a seed that, if properly welcomed, will not fail to bear abundant fruit."

POPE: PAUL KNEW THE HEART OF CHRIST Even though St. Paul never knew Christ in person, the Apostle knew the heart of Jesus, and that's what matters, says Benedict XVI. The Pope said this during the weekly general audience held in St. Peter's Square. More than 25,000 were present to hear the Pontiff continue the cycle of catecheses dedicated to the figure and thought of St. Paul. There are two ways to get to know a person, Benedict XVI explained in the first part of the address: to know a person physically, or to know the heart of a person. "To know 'according to the flesh,' in a corporeal way, means to know only from the outside, with external criteria," he said. "One can see a person many times, recognize the individual's facial characteristics and the many details of how he acts: how he talks, moves, etc. "Yet, even knowing someone in this way, one does not really know the person, one doesn't know the nucleus of the person. Only with the heart is one able to truly know a person."
The Pope gave as an example the Pharisees and Sadducees who "knew Christ from the outside [...] but they did not know him in his truth." He continued: "There are learned individuals who know many details of Christ, and simple people who don't know these details, but they know Christ in his truth: 'The heart speaks to the heart.' "And Paul essentially says that he knows Jesus in this way, with the heart." "St. Paul did not think Jesus was something historical," the Pope said, "as a person from the past. He certainly knew the great tradition regarding his life, his words, his death and his resurrection, but he did not treat them as something from the past; he proposed them as the reality of the living Jesus. "The words and actions of Jesus for Paul do not pertain to a historic time, to the past. Jesus lives now and speaks with us now, and lives for us. "This is the true manner to get to know Jesus, and to learn the tradition of him." "We should also learn to know Jesus," the Ponitff added, "not physically, as a person of the past, but as our Lord and brother, that today is with us and shows us how to live and how to die."

Yousef Yakoub Cardinal Brady has asked parishes to welcome a visit from Yousef Yakoub who is a clerical student sub-deacon of the Maronite Catholic Diocese of Haifa and the Holy Land in Israel. Yousef is carrying out a project during his studies in Ireland and he has described it for us as follows in his own words;

Basically this project is an initiative in response to the daily needs of a large part of the Christian craftsmen in Bethlehem. The majority of the Christians in Bethlehem work in areas related to tourism and the organization of pilgrimages, which is the main source of their economy. But since the breakout of the troubles in September 2000, the presence of pilgrims in the country has declined by 95%. This resulted by many families finding themselves without work and consequently had decided to search for a better place where they can live in peace and with dignity. In fact in the last few years many Christian families had emigrated.
What can be done for the “rest” of the Christian population? How much longer will they endure?
At the Sunday Masses I will speak to the people for few minutes about their sisters and brothers in Christ that live in Bethlehem and after each mass they would be able to support these families if they wish by buying some of the religious items that are made there.

Yousef has been invited to speak to us after Communion on Mission Sunday for a few minutes.
