St.Michael’s Church Redecoration and Refurbishment
Over the next month the interior of St.Michael’s will be redecorated, the near century old Stations of the Cross cleaned and mended, and the eastern side altar restored. In addition the outside car parking area will be more properly secured to combat anti-social activity in church grounds and the main church doors as well as the outer railings of the church and shrine will be cleaned and painted. In earlier times families and volunteers undertook church redecoration projects – the last major one took place in 1980 and is marked by a plaque at the back of the church. As people today tend to be ‘time poor’ and there are also new health and safety/ insurance issues it has been decided on this occasion that instead of asking for voluntary labour families & parishioners would be invited to make a contribution towards the redecoration project which will all be done by local tradesmen– a concert is also planned in the Church in late October to help defray costs. White Envelopes marked St.Michael’s 2008 are available at the back of the church and can be returned when convenient. When the work is completed a plaque will be mounted acknowledging the donations of the contributors to the 2008 project and they will also be entered as a group in the parish Book of Benefactors. It is also intended that a small memorial to Fr.Richard Everard PP who built St.Michael’s with the strong support of the local parish community in 1857 and whose remains lie under the main altar will be placed in a suitable site. This memorial will be unveiled during the concert in October. Everyone who uses the church is invited to make a contribution however small towards the project so that we may pass on this beautiful and important part of Clogherhead’s Christian and community life and heritage to another generation.

Peter’s Pence Collection
"Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels alone.”
- Pope Benedict XVI
In September of 2006, Pope Benedict XVI gave a homily in which he explained that those who are baptized create one family of believers who are never alone. The Peter’s Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters with promptness, love, and compassion, so God’s people will not feel alone in their time of misfortune.
The Peter’s Pence Collection derives its name from an ancient custom. In ninth-century England. King Alfred the Great collected money – a “pence” - from landowners as financial support for the Pope. Today, the Peter’s Pence Collection supports the Pope’s philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease.

2008-2009 The Year of St.Paul
Benedict XVI says the newly inaugurated Pauline Jubilee Year is an invitation to every Christian to be a missionary of the Gospel. The Pope affirmed this last Sunday before praying the Angelus with thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square. Last Saturday, he inaugurated the Pauline year at a ceremony at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. "Historians in fact situate the birth of Saul -- who later became Paul -- about seven to 10 years after Christ's," the Holy Father noted. "Thus, after the passage of about 2,000 years, I wanted to call this special jubilee, which will naturally have Rome as its center, especially the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls and the place of martyrdom at Tre Fontane. "But it will involve the whole Church, beginning with Tarsus, Paul's city of birth, and the other Pauline places in present day Turkey and the Holy Land, which are pilgrimage destinations, as well as the island of Malta, where the apostle came after a shipwreck and sowed the fruitful seed of the Gospel." The Pontiff said the "horizon of the Pauline Year cannot but be universal because St. Paul was, par excellence, the apostle of those who, in regard to the Jews, were 'distant,' and who, 'thanks to the blood of Christ,' were drawn 'near.'"
"For this reason, today too, in a world that has become 'small,' but where many have not yet met the Lord Jesus, the Jubilee of St. Paul invites all Christians to be missionaries of the Gospel," the Pope affirmed. "This missionary dimension must always be accompanied by that of unity, represented by St. Peter, the 'rock' on which Jesus Christ built his Church. "As is underscored by the liturgy, the charisms of the two great apostles are complementary in building up the one people of God and Christians cannot offer a valid witness to Christ if they are not united." "The Pauline year, evangelization, communion in the Church and full unity among Christians," Benedict XVI listed, "let us now pray for these great intentions, entrusting them to the celestial intercession of Mary Most Holy, Mother of the Church and Queen of the Apostles."
