Clogherhead Fishermen’s Co-op - DID YOU KNOW!
Clogherhead Fishermen’s Co-op started in 1999, currently has eleven active members and accounts for nearly 30% of the Irish quota for prawns. Over the last two years, there have been three replacement vessels, (Craig Byrne, Seamus Kirk, Oliver Kirwan) and this year saw the arrival of two fabulous new "state of the art" vessels for Jim Connolly & Michael Kirwan. Vessels in the fleet are:
Celtic Venturer
Celtic Warrior
Supreme II
Endurance
Galopin
La Troupadour
Rose of Sharon
Seagull II
Skipper
Star Immaculate
Star of Nazareth
Village Maid
The Co-op has been instrumental in developing trace ability systems for the source of the catch and currently has a customer base of over 80. Focus recently has been working in conjunction with the local fishermens organisation to secure funding for the much needed new harbour at Port Oriel. Tender documents are currently with the Dept of Finance for approval & all being well, it is hoped to have building finalised in the latter half of 2006.
Prices in the industry have fallen drastically in the last number of years, but on a positive note averages versus same period last year are up since March 2004. Volumes, quota & days at sea regulations will be even more challenging in the future.
The Co-op exports over 50% of all landings. It's customer base covers local, Dublin, and all processors in the island of Ireland. Physical auctions for prawns are held every Moday & Thursday at 3pm, whilst other species are sold by direct sales.
