Modernisation and Extension of Port Oriel

The project at Port Oriel involved the demolition of the end of the existing pier, the construction of a 105 meter extension of the pier and an armoured breakwater on the seaward side using xblocs as the armoured unit. The installation of a RC capping beam & concrete deck slab and wave wall, dredging of the harbour basin, the installation of services and the construction of a small open piled suspended deck.

The xblocs used on this project are designed by a Dutch firm DMC Marine and this is the first project in Europe to be designed with this type of armour unit. Each xbloc has a mass of 9.4 tonnes, approximately 1400 of these units are required to armour the breakwater. The first four rows of xblocs are placed by crawler cranes and with diver assistance for the final positioning. To date close to 700 xblocs have been positioned.

The dredging of the harbour basin was also undertaken to a level of -4.2m Chart Datum (-7.2m Malin) this now allows for improved access at low water. The total volume of material dredged was approximately 44,000 tonnes, with 35,000 tonnes already dredged from the basin.

The sheet piles used for the construction of the main pile wall are Arcelor PU32 steel piles varying in length from 12m to 20m. A total of 405 piles make up the main pile wall. The width of the finished pier will be 15.7m (equivalent to a 4 lane carriageway)

The project is now complete and provides the Clogherhead fishing fleet with the most modern of facilities.

Charles Brand Ltd was awarded this contract in February 2005. In April of 2006 Charles Brand Ltd merged with its sister companies in the Lagan Group to form Lagan Construction Ltd.

Lagan Construction is a new Lagan company which was formed in 2006 following the merger of three very successful Lagan civil engineering companies, namely, Charles Brand Ltd, Whitemountain Civils Ltd and Lagan International Ltd. Operating throughout Ireland, the UK and in diverse global markets, Lagan Construction carries out high quality civil engineering projects in the water, wastewater, marine, rail, sea defence, power generation, airports, airfields and roads sectors. More information can be found on www.lagan-group.co.uk

The Development Group would like to express their thanks to the Lagan Construction and in particular John McCarey for providing the above information which is of great interest to the people of Clogherhead and all the users/vistors to these facilities. The newly extended harbour will be a great asset to the local Fishing fleet.
