Sean, when I read your note last week I wondered if you read my mind. I work for the Daily News in Jersy City. We get off between 2 and 3 A.M. then I drive south 60 miles home The first half of the trip is lit up by cities, street lights and on coming cars and trucks. Then it turns pitch black and the road is all mine. I always have a eye out for meteors and deer but Orion and his trusty dog Sirius dominate the heavens all winter long. I have wondered what it would look like out on the Head so you got me thinking and I realise we are at close latitudes so the sky is the same. A cold clear windless night and you can almost pet Sirius. You mentioned your stargazing was on a Tuesday was that Nov 11. I remember last year you told us about your relative the war time poet and your grandson being pick lay a wreath on his class trip. I am sorry your posting of the poem has been deleted. the 90th anniversary would have made a better remembrance than watching the BBC video of Charlie and the Duchess with Sarkozy at the Verdun Ceremony. Although Carla did add a little unneeded class to the occasion .

On Tuesday night I was outside my house and looking up at a clear sky and a beautiful bright moon. Lots of stars everywhere in the sky. We do not often have the opportunity while living in London to see such a marvellous sight. All we usually see are street lights and tall buildings.
However it brought tumbling back to me memories of times. long ,long ago. This was a sight I was used to seeing while growing up in Clogherhead. Because I grew up in the Clogherhead of the 30s and 40s ,when we had no street lights, in fact very little light of any description, it would be impossible for the people living in the 50s onwards to understand what is was like, how beautiful it was to live in the village at that time. Remember we had no TV etc. to sit watching all night. No and we did not need it. We would make our own entertainment. We used to go for long walks in the moonlight. We would walk for hours and sometimes sit on the Head looking out at the moon shining on the sea.
God how I wish I could go back to that period, to that beautiful village, to visit the wonderful people that lived there. –0h I know all we have left are our dreams. sean

4euro is not the worst Helen, some pubs in Dublin charge over 5euros just to have a pint of the black stuff! And the government slapped another 50cent on a buideal of vino! So if you're coming home, pick up a five litre box for me please - I think $11.29 comes to Euro 9.41! Happy days!

With regard to the election of a President in the USA. Lets all try to get a grip of reality. He is an African/American....... he wants "change".............. he has a new and interesting administration who back him completely.............he wants troops out of a foriegn land.............he has a lovely family with young children.
Lets wind back 50 years or so...........he was an Irish/American.......... he had a new and interesting administration who "changed" things.............. he wanted troops out of a foriegn land and had a lovely family as well.

Then one day on Dealey Plaza that was cut down and finished completely.

I hope and pray that they don't do that again

See that is what I am thinking about too, this thought that Obama is there now and all will be allright and it won't be for a while maybe a long while, so how long will it take for people to turn on him? I am glad he is there maybe he will make a difference and get those troops out of Iraq, althought that too wont be done in a day. I dont know why Americans voted him back in the last four year maybe they thought the devil they knew was better than the one they didnt! Donnow, I definatley did not vote for him. And McCain with his "We will stay in Iraq for another hundred years" finished him for me! Anyway I will let the rest of yis voice your opinions now as I am off to get, deliver and desperse a hape of kids all over town!!!

Helen and friends I am not sure if I should write about your election. I have been to the states a number of times during your elections and attended some meetings. No doubt the election of Barrack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America is a moment to savour. Proof that the promise of a better day can still carry the electorate.
On his very first day ,and without doing a thing Barrack Obama has brought America together and brought America closer to the rest of the world. The people of America have decided their country needs to change. That’s what their politicians told them. I heard some of the speeches from both parties. What I heard from John Mc Cain was very little about policy but the slogan ---We are going to fight ---.Fight who? I wonder, surely the time for fighting is over.
From Barrack Obama I heard the slogan –Change a new tomorrow we are going to take back our country. Tomorrow will be a new start.---
I watched the thousands of people gathered in Chicago to see the results come in. And it was very moving and very emotional watching it. Many people young and old crying and saying how happy they were to live to see this day.
However it remained me of watching a TV programme here in England called Dr Who where large crowds of people are in the streets of London and Dr Who is about to save the world from doom. By the way Barrack looks very like Dr Who (David Tenet )
Black people deserve their place in history. There are many great black people, men and women who have already reached the top. In politics, and in every walk of life there are famous black people, so really it should have not surprised us to see Barrack in the White House.
However I will never understand what makes the American public vote the way they do. Yes I know that George Bush is the most un popular leader in history. But who put him in the White House three years ago. At that time America was fighting in Iraq and losing their young men in a war nobody wanted .Yet the American voters sent him back to the White House. Why? Can anybody explain the reason? So why complain about him now, while he was wrong to go to war we should remember that many including the Democratic Party agreed with him when he attacked Iraq. And a lot of the financial downturn is not his fault.
Anyhow back to Obama---------I heard a woman given a interview on election night from Chicago. She was in trouble with her mortgage, money for food etc. and she says I don’t have to worry anymore, everything will be different tomorrow. I wont have any more problems, everything will be taken care of. --- It will be very difficult to improve job prospects in parts of America and will result in many unhappy people.
But I suppose Barrack can and will do his best for America.

Yes that is exactly what I was talking about below there Liz. I am hoping to God that some mutt from the back ass of one of these states doesnt get any ideas, two or three young fellas were already arrested the week before last for conspiring to assinate Obama or seomthing like that. I did not read any more than the headlines. That man has a long hard road ahead of him and he will more than likely piss of as many blacks as whites with his changes only problem is but this country harbours many many Klansmen and Arian gangs that not many are aware of but are still in full operation and in States that would surprise you. I bet you any money that if and when Obama gets to the end of his first term that his hair will be snow white! Poor Hoor!
