You never know what will happen in 20 years! If you told me I would leave Clogher and go to New York at 19 and 7 yearsw later, then a soldier and end up in the backass of Texas AFTER living in at least 6 other States I would have said you were absolutley friggen deluded!

I remember now! Yes Roisin Donaghy, I definately remember her. I would have to see photos!!! But I could never forget Elizabeth McKeating! Jesus she made me laugh! OER RAAAAB! I thought the chaps name was RAB never realized it was Robert for the longest time!! his friends name was something Lewis, black haired with a moustache and Lewie was a nickname, never knew that for years either!!! They had to have been at least 4 or more years older than me cause they'd treat me like a little sister and me blinded by the both of them!!! I probably would not recognize any of them if they showed up at me front door!!! The years go past so fast these days I live in Texas and have three sons and it's like I blinked and the last fifteen years skipped past me! I will have to check on that one for you Ailish. Thanks Desi you brought back a flood of memories and faces I had often wondered about over the years! I hope they all turned out to have happy lives and families cause they really were a lovely bunch of people am glad I sot to hang out with those summers! Thinking of Rob McKeating makes me smile though am remembering all the rows we had! He teased me something awful and always found the right way to piss me off and Lewie would always stop me from wanting to or trying to hit him on the head with a damn bottle, I don't know which of them I had the bigger crush on!!! Then as the years went on they would bring down the girlfriends and we discovered the next generation of lads from Belfast and the surrounding area!!!

David Henry was going out with a girl from the village in the 70's.It was such a fun time... and then the Dreadnots won the cup...Who remembers that party?

No Ailish, Fintan Stanley lived for a while below in one of the thatched houses at the Little Strand, the middle one. Then lived down in the Ferrard Hotel at the Chapel (his Grandfather owned it) Houston Stanley is the man who lived on the Main Street and he is his uncle.

Hi All - Albert you might be able to help me with this one! I have a childhood memory of Fintan Stanley and Maisie Mc Daniel in Rita Tuite's spare bedroom (this was at the old old post office on Strand Street before it moved to the Reeds). They sang the "Is Clogherhead as it used to be" to me, I was sat on the floor whilst both of them were sat on the bed.Was Fintan one of the Stanley's from Main Street/ I think Gabrielle Levins now owns the house. I've asked my Mum but as she's not from the village, she doesn't know the connection.
I don't know why it's important to me...it's a memory that keeps coming back...I could only have been 7 / 8 at the time!

I've been reading these messages for over a year now! The last message from Desi in Cork really takes me back to my youth. Gagy, Emmanuel (and his friend David something or other). Ashling Hops, were Rita Miles told me that I had to dance with every boy who asked me otherwise I'd be thrown out. I'm still not sure if that was a rule or if Rita was winding me up. She's still a better dancer than I am.
The summers were great...I can't remember it raining...if it did we broke into my Dad's house on Strand Street (Peter Levins of Smugglers Cottage was my Father). We then raided his kitchen or even crept through the long grass in the back garden and pinched apples from Minnie's trees. We did the same down at Paddy Tracey's but my english accent gave me away and Paddy knew who I was straight away.
I visited Clogher twice last summer and had a great time. It has changed a lot over the past decade or so, not all for the better. The old Clogherhead is still there, as are many of my relatives and friends. Hopefully my girls and I will see you all again in the not so distant future.
Does anyone know when the blessing of the boats and the blessing of the graves are this year?

Hi Helen I was thinking our paths might have crossed alright but now i,m positive as the Donaghys our cousins of mine it,s a small world ! I,m sure i,d have a heart attack as well if any of my one,s got up to some of the stuff we got up to back then ! Having said that it was all pretty harmless by todays standards. It,s 17 years since I was in clogher but since discovering this site it has brought back some fantastic memories Im going to go back before the summer is over

Hi Desi, I kinda figured you were from the North causee most of the visitors in them days were either from the North or From Dublin, if you were friends with Christy Gargan I reckon you might be around the same age which would make me about 6 years younger and I would have been picking up empty glasses in teh Big Tree while youse were enjoying your pints!!! (and hiding under the counter when the Gardai came in!!!) I loved that job! Did you ever know a couple of lads from Belfast area they always had a few friends with them but the two I remember distinctly were called Emanuel Donaghy (always thought his name was Manniel and his friend Louis (Looie!) They came to Clogher for years and years and Manniel has a sister called Liz. I left Clogherhead when I was 19 and went to NY and never heard sight nor light of any of them since! I had a bunchof great friends (and boyfriends) from the North and Dublin that made summers in Clogher the best ever! We never needed to go on holiday anywhere else cause nobody wanted to miss anything from Easter to August! That did not stop Daddy from bringing us round every OTHER Harbour all around Ireland!!! I can't speak for now but any child in Clogher during the 70's and 80's just had the best time! Ok I speak for myself I wish I could let my sons go roaming around like we used to back them! I would probably have a heart attack if my ones decided to go roaming around here and I live in a great neighbourhood!!! Mind you if any of mine done what I done climbing over the rocks on me own going from the little strand to the Head (no cell phones, mother with no clue where I was for hours on end!) there probably would not be enough wine in the world to calm me down!!! Have you ever gone back? My only regret of living here is that my kids have two sets of cousins they should be growing up with and only get to see on visits, maybe they will get to know each other better on Facebook!!!

Hi Helen,Thanks for u,r reply. I spent every summer in clogherhead from 72 to 80 and became good friends with a lot of the locals even spent a good few nights out in smokey. Had my first drink in the pool room in minnies!even went away fishing with the lads who looked after me like one of their own.
Too many of them to name but one guy I great mates with was Christy Gargan (gaggy) havn,t seen him in 17 years so just in case he see,s this dont let the cork location throw him as im originaly from the North and you are spot on about the Lobster Inn No 1 for the chips alright!!!

Hi Desi, sorry nobody else got to comment on your post but I will! I dont know what years you were talking about but when I was growing up the summer consisted of going to The Big Tree (the original one) and Minnies and the Sail Inn and then off to the Ashling for the Dance and then walk back down the road to the Lobster Inn for the chips and sausages (cause God knows they did make the best!) and then for the walk home. But growing up in Clogher them times was THE BEST!!! And am glad that all those people that came to visit from North and South in Caravans and Tents had kids that remembered the good times they had while on their holidays in Clogherhead a million years ago! I would love to know what ever happened to the Ashling cause it looks like in photos that it is still standing! Is it being used for anything?

Hi Albert, I dont remember if I met your cousin Rod but I think I did at my cousins house where I definately met Joyce. I know she has an older sister that was in the same class as me. Its shocking I cant remember her name but I know she has another sister called Grace and maybe an older on called Denise. I think! Jesus it's a small world! My memory is gone to hell!I will be in some state by the time we all pile home again for the 50th Birthdays and with the Little Strand closed, no Sail Inn or Big Tree we will have to baiil into Minnies back room with the option to go over to annoy the heart and soul of Jackie and Libby or down to Declans but shure we have seven years to go so we will see who is the last bar standing! I was just reading the Drogheda Leader and I seen an article with the Councleman and I was racking my brain then I remembered FRANKLIN DEE! But he said it was 12 years since the last Prawn Festival! 12 years, Holy Crap! 12 years since we sat on the street listening to Rain Check and the Bottles (wonder what ever happened to them!)drinking pints while sitting on the footpath outside Nannies! It would be really cool for it to be resurrected and pulled off. I suppose with all the new people in Clogher now maybe everyone will pull together and get the show on the road it would be a great money maker for the Village!!! Anyway, enough out of me ...............

Deirdre, well I'm sorry but I did'nt get to see you this time round(although we have met before a good few years ago)
I did'nt meet Denis or Patrick or Lorriane either.......... so sorry Helen, but as your probably aware.....its very difficult to meet everyone in such a short space of time.
The village is looking great and especially the new pier. What a credit it is to all the hard work by many people involved in all the lobbying etc and the result is fantastic.
Dierdre...........I saw Thomas of course and had a great game of pitch and putt over at Seapoint with him and my cousin Cody (Alan Coleman).Went to Bellewstown and lost a heap of money!!
Helen......... my cousin Rod is married to a girl (Joyce Everret) that went to school with your sister Lorraine and she passes her regards. I never got time to pop into your dads place so maybe next time I am over?
Emer.......... thanks for the great service in Declans.
The weather was great when I was back, and of course that always helps.............. but fair weather or not.......... Clogherhead does and always will have a special place in my heart.
Well done to all of you'se who make it special.

A man in Tesco tries to buy half a cauliflower. The very young produce assistant tells him that they sell only whole cauliflowers. The man persists and asks to see the manager.
The boy says he'll ask his manager about it.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager,

'Some prat out there wants to buy half a cauliflower.'

As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him,

so he added, 'And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.'

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.

Later the manager said to the boy, 'I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?'

'Liverpool, sir,' the boy replied. 'Well, why did you leave Liverpool?' the manager asked.

The boy said, 'Sir, there's nothing but whores and footballers up there.'

'Really?' said the manager. 'My wife is from Liverpool.'

'You're kidding?' replied the boy. 'Who'd she play for?'
